doom (computer game variety)

i've checked out some playthrough videos and reviews and stuff on the recent (and by recent let's say i mean anything this century) doom games and nothing about them is really my cup of tea at this point.

rip and tear pretty well loses its charm for me once the violence gets much less pixelly than the mid-to-late 90s state of the art, and the newest ones seem to have grafted some convoluted sci-fi mythos plot business on there which i do not find motivating at all.

original doom engine material though?

holy shit did that whole thing ever work its way deep into my psyche. firing up e1m1 of original shareware doom is like stepping back into some room of my childhood home i haven't opened for a while.

i'm gonna be 41 in a few weeks. i still wake up from those dreams where i'm running around in some sort of james-cameron's-aliens-meets-doom-map scenario with a shotgun, which has been happening since, well, 1993 probably.

@brennen Wolfenstein 3d was the first game I remembered having dreams about! But for instant reminiscences, q3dm17 was my jam.

re: doom (computer game variety)

@brennen while working underage for a computer store in '94? i helped to run/monitor their exhibit which was a little computer lan at the state fair, where people could play doom. hours a day for a week and my dreams became 100% doom, for a while

re: doom (computer game variety)

@brennen tfw you hear the doom door-opening sound in any sci-fi tv show

@brennen Back to Saturn X is good, and I still run around in Sunlust once in a while.

@brennen yeah what i've seen of the lore part was a huge massive turnoff for me, even as someone who's *written* a lot of Doom lore in mods and fanfic

it's cool when there's some element of social commentary or speculative what-if, but pure fantasy demon stuff always ends up falling flat for me

the evocative, inviting sparseness (not minimalist!) of the original game's plot is so terribly underrated
