i'll never forget the lightbulb that went off in my brain when, as an early 20-something teaching intern in a democratic school in the early 2000s, ranting about the blinding obviousness of something or another i'd just read in an ivan illich book or the like about the ills of state-sponsored schooling, one of the older and more jaded heads present said sort of mildly "of course a lot of bush jr.'s people would tell you the same."

i dunno why exactly this memory just popped into my head so sharply except that i'm having a lot of those "things aren't quite what they tell you they are" moments lately.

I think it was the Chinese communists, but I might be wrong.
