that did not go well, but now that i've actually read the instructions i will try again tomorrow.

i like decentralization in a "i want another route to the store if the highway blows up" kind of way, not whatever nonsense crypto bros are on

it has reached that time of year where the floor is cold so i sit cross-legged on the chair to warm my feet until my legs go numb and then i have to put my feet back on the floor and now my feet are cold _and_ tingling violently.

food

i sure do appreciate a saltine cracker sometimes.

recent colorado fires, climate

it would perhaps be an understatement to say that i don't usually look to name-brand east coast publications for nuanced coverage of the region i live in, but this new york mag interview with a boulder-based climate scientist is good stuff and hits a lot of the "well, fuck, if *that* can burn..." vibes this is giving people here:

(january is the monday to february's tuesday; as we all well know, february is the worst month of the year in much the same way that tuesday is the worst day of the week. january, like monday, also kind of sucks.)

I cannot figure out a partial quote that is stuck in my head, it's something like "in parting, we meet again," anyone have any ideas? it feels like maybe a movie quote, because when I think about it I can hear it being said cheerfully? Mastodon help

midwinter garden report (alc)

my folks gave me a bucket of high-altitude seeds from seedstrust.com/ so i guess that and seeds saved from the fall will be most of next year's planting, but i still feel like i might order a few things.

finally, i'm thinking seriously about some kind of modular cold-frame / tiny greenhouse design to go over the beds in the spring. i'm convinced i can tack a month on either end of the growing season if i do it right.

midwinter garden report (alc)

the deer seem to have eaten all of the ground apples i hadn't managed to compost-pile, which pushes total crop utilization from (optimistically) 50% to like 90%. it was a lot of apples for one bedraggled little tree.

i still haven't dug the carrots and it's suddenly been -5°F after weeks of "why is it 70° in december" type weather, so those may be a loss.

partner got around to bottling the hard cider & apple wine she made from all the cider we squished out of the absurd apple crop; i can report that it's not half bad (better than much of the homebrew beer i've ever had, where the standard is "well, that tastes like homebrew") and certainly produces a buzz.

also giving me a solid reminder that i'm not good at soldering stuff to tiny little smd pads

have just opened up a korg volca for the first time, which is giving me a new appreciation for how much these little beasties pack inside a slightly chintzy plastic box with some little plastic knobs.
